You may have heard the term “open enrollment” at work or when people talk about buying insurance through health-care exchanges (insurance marketplaces set up by the Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare.”) As a military retiree, you may have also heard of the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP). But what is open enrollment, and how does it affect you?
Generally, there are two times when you can sign up for health and dental insurance coverage: when you experience a qualifying event and during open enrollment. Qualifying events are big life changes, such as:
- Marriage or divorce
- The birth of a child (or adoption)
- A death in the family
- Change of employer (or job loss)
- Losing your other coverage
FEDVIP open season is the period from early November until early December when you can change your insurance coverage or enroll in new coverage without a qualifying event. This is a great time to look at your current coverage and plan for the future.
As a military retiree, you have several options to choose a plan that’s right for you. Will you add family members to your plan? Will you have family members leaving your plan? Have your needs changed since you first signed up for your coverage?
Whether you’re looking for a plan with standard benefits or a plan that offers maximum flexibility and coverage, Delta Dental has been working for 30 years to provide quality dental coverage for members of the military community.
